Coffee in Vienna

Picture
If you are an European traveler and you visit the Austrian capital, Vienna, you should definitely not miss a great Viennese coffee. It is one of the great reasons to visit this beautiful city in the first place. Vienna is renowned for its exceptional coffee culture. There are countless traditional coffee houses dating back from the 19th century, so finding a place where to sit down and relax while having a nice cup of coffee should not be a problem.

It is important to know that you simply can't order "coffee" while in Vienna. First of all, there are dozens of varieties of coffees, and second, by ordering "just a coffee", you would offend the head waiter (Herr Ober).

Here is a list of the most common coffees that you may serve while visiting Vienna:

- Kleiner Schwarzer - could also be referred to as a Mokka or as a Schwarzer. It is what people from Vienna call the espresso.
- Großer Schwarzer - it is important cu known that this is simply a double Schwarzer (in other words, a double espresso).
- Kleiner Brauner - is an espresso (Mokka) with cream on a side.
- Großer Brauner - it is the same thing as the Kleiner Brauner only double.
- Melange - some say that is the most representative coffee of Vienna. It is basically the same thing as a cappuccino but with extra mokka and foamy milk.
- Verlangerter - it is almost the same thing as a small Americano. In other words, is an expresso with extra hot water.
- Kaffee Verkehrt - if you are looking for a latte, this is the local version of it. You can also find it under the name of Kaffee Latte.

Another important aspect that you should be aware of is the Kaisermelange specialty. It is the pride of the Viennese senior waiter and it contains coffee, cognac, egg yolk and milk.

Cafes in Vienna not only serve coffee but also wine, beer and different liqueurs. You may also serve meals there, especially lunch. This might be a great idea for a budget traveler, because a meal at one of these cafes is usually cheaper than in a restaurant.

Do not, under any circumstances, order a coffee to go! This can only be done at Starbucks or at McDonalds. In doing so, you will most likely enrage the cafe staff. Coffee in Vienna should be enjoyed in the company of your friends or while reading a newspaper in a nice and quiet ambient.
